Case Study No.1 Client: Private Client Location: The Tarn, Eltham Court Road Description of Contract: The Tarn is a small urban park sited in Eltham, and owned and managed by the London Borough of Greenwich. It boasts a delightful lake, which had sadly become heavily silted up over the years. Kingcombe Aquacare was tasked with developing a method statement for removal of the silt from the lake without damaging the environment. The cost of disposal to a landfill site made this option unacceptable, and in any case the environmental cost of hauling the wet material through the streets of Eltham could not be justified. There had to be another way. Kingcombe Aquacare devised a plan to pump the silt onto an area of rough woodland, which was sited alongside the park but which was not integral to it. The Environment Agency were prepared to accept this plan and grant an exemption under the Waste Disposal Regulations, subject to a proper Environmental Impact Assessment being carried out on the proposed disposal area. We were able to call upon one of our associate environmental companies to carry out this work on our behalf. A complete plant and invertebrate survey was carried out on the site, and a report submitted to the Agency which satisfied the requirements of the Conservation Officer. As a result the work went ahead, without any heavy haulage on the roads, and without taking up valuable landfill space. The lake has now been partially desilted. When funds are available the intention is to complete the project, and restore this lovely park to its original beauty. Back To Top | Back To Consultancy Case Study No.2 Client: Private Client Location: Woolcombe Farm, Dorset Description of Contract: Our client wished to construct an amenity and conservation lake in the valley below his property on this secluded Dorset farm. Unfortunately the only appropriate site for aesthetic and practical purposes was contiguous to, but not part of, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). This obviously raised many conservation issues, involving the local Planning Authority, the local Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency and English Nature. Everyone, including our client, was conscious of the sanctity of the SSSI, but there were strong moves also made to prevent any development of the waste ground alongside. These were the issues that Kingcombe Aquacare was asked to address. Using our extensive range of contacts, we were able to appoint specialists to carry out detailed surveys of the area in question, including a hydrogeologist, entomologist, botanist and geophysical engineer. We were able to collate all their findings into a substantial weight of evidence as an Environmental Impact Assessment, which satisfied the planners and the Agency that there was no justification for not allowing the development | ||||||
